Your EUR 3,000 e-bike vanishes from the rack outside the grocery store. You pull out your phone, open the tracker app, and watch a blue dot moving across the city map. Relief — you know where it is. But then what? You call the police, show them the dot on your screen, and they ask: "Can you prove it's yours?"
That question is where the GPS tracker story gets complicated. Trackers and registration solve different parts of the bike theft problem, and neither one covers everything on its own. Here's what actually works.
How GPS bike trackers work
GPS trackers for bicycles fall into two categories: dedicated cellular trackers and Bluetooth crowd-sourced tags.

Where GPS trackers fall short
Trackers have real limitations that the marketing glosses over.
They don't prevent theft. A hidden tracker does nothing to deter a thief. It's invisible by design. The bike still gets stolen — you just find out where it went afterward. Recovery without you doing anything. Research shows that registered bikes have recovery rates around 15-23%, compared to roughly 5% for unregistered ones. That gap exists because registered bikes can be matched to owners even when they turn up months later in a police warehouse or second-hand shop.
Registration is also free (on Bike Registry, at least), permanent, requires no batteries, and doesn't depend on any company staying in business.
What registration can't do
Registration doesn't tell you where your bike is right now. If someone steals your registered bike and rides it across town, you have no way to track it in real time. You file a police report, mark it stolen in the database, search marketplaces, and wait. That waiting period is where registered bikes without trackers lose ground — the bike may move through several hands before anyone checks the serial number.
